The Team Rhino Association is located in Meridian, Idaho and was founded by the late Professor Keith Owen and his wife Shirlane Owen in 1993 in Twin Falls Idaho. Keith was a 4th degree black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under Legendary 8th degree Gracie Black Belt Master Pedro Sauer. (www.pedrosauer.com) Keith held black belts in two other martial arts styles, a 4th degree in TAI Karate and a black sash in Wu Wei Gung Fu under Bruce Lee Student Joseph Cowles.

Shirlane Owen continues to lead their academy, Team Rhino Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Meridian, Idaho along with their 24 amazing instructors and staff. 

SAFETY AND TECHNIQUE

Safety First

One of most important aspects of learning Jiu-Jitsu with Team Rhino is our insistence on “Safety through Perfect Technique.” We understand that getting injured while grappling does not benefit your school and more importantly the injured student at that school. Getting injured can require time off from training, time off from work, not being able to enjoy life with loved ones, can cost thousands of dollars in medical bills and can quickly force a student to quit the art of Jiu-Jitsu without fully realizing its life changing benefits. It is to be avoided at all costs.

The Team Rhino association insists that all students work on attaining the best technique possible and not using maximum strength and athleticism when trying to submit someone. Students must have an attitude of taking care of their training partner during technique practice, drilling and during live grappling. This will ensure that you are practicing Jiu-Jitsu for Life and can continue to practice martial arts safely your entire life. Rest Assured we will be teaching you Jiu-Jitsu that relies on Technique over Athleticism.

The Importance of Amazing Technique

Here at Team Rhino Ground Control Certified we want to express the importance of using the best technique possible when practicing the Team Rhino Ground Control Certified drills and during free grappling with our teammates.

Without the proper technique a student is forced to use brute strength over a resisting opponent. This is ok if you have the brute strength to do it but what do people with limited upper body strength do, the elderly, kids, women, men of smaller stature? Hard to teach brute force. What happens if I am injured? What happens when I get old? Brute strength will be of limited use. Amazing Technique improves through your whole life!

Using the concept of solid defensive principles along with proper leverage, proper timing, attacking our opponent’s weak muscle groups with our strong ones at the right angles, we are able to grapple an actively resisting opponent at least fifty pounds heavier than us.

Amazing Technique allows EVERYONE to train for life and will prevent many injuries that only uncontrolled brute force can inflict. When a street encounter is over we may or may not have won the fight against a larger stronger dedicated opponent but at least we won’t lose.
